Generational Farm
Generational Farm
Location: Hanover, PA
Project Size: Cottage: 2,321 GSF, Barn: 832 GSF, Main House: 3,019 GSF
Project Overview:
Designed in the agriculture vernacular, this multi-generational farm provides residences for four families. SAAarchitects provided architectural services for the reconstruction of the original property cottage, new construction of a stand alone “barn” to function as an at home gym, and fully renovated the main house on the property. Construction was completed in 2023.
The project’s site is rich in history; originally bought by the client’s grandfather multiple decades ago. The current home owner of the cottage grew up there as a child. His son lived there before the reconstruction and house swap.
The stone fireplace was an original structure on the property and used as a weekend picnic spot outside of town. Over time a roof was built around the fireplace to become a pavilion, which then became enclosed with subsequent additions for a porch, a kitchen and then a bathroom and bedrooms. The client’s father then built the larger main house that was renovated as the new home for his son and his family. His daughter and her family and his in-laws also live in homes on the property.
